This is the most extraordinary betrayal in Australian politics in living memory – levying a new tax despite an explicit, unqualified promise not to do so.
Julia Gillard will try to make many excuses – but nothing she says can cover this up. Despite her promises, despite her excuses, today she announced a carbon tax.
From the middle of next year, Australian families will pay $300 more for power each year. Small businesses, large businesses and farms will all face higher costs for electricity and fuel.
Just as we opposed Labor’s ETS, the Coalition will oppose this new tax and this breach of faith with voters.
Australians now know that nothing Julia Gillard says can be believed.
