Senator the Hon Scott Ryan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education, helped to officially open one of Victoria’s newest schools, St Mary of the Cross Primary School, today in Point Cook.

St Mary of the Cross Primary School has been in operation since term one this year, but staff and students have waited until term three for the official unveiling of their $4.7 million campus, funded in part by the Australian Government under the Capital Grants Programme (CGP).

“This is an area of Melbourne that is experiencing enormous growth. Schools like St Mary of the Cross Primary School will be instrumental in ensuring local families have access to quality education,” Senator Ryan said.

“The Parish of Laverton, parents, staff and an army of volunteers have all worked together to help this vibrant young school establish the best possible foundations.”

The school buildings were funded in part by a $1.8 million Australian Government grant.  These buildings include learning spaces for 240 students, art and drama rooms, a reception, community café and staff areas.

“The buildings, landscaping works and playground really bring this school to life and will help create an environment for student learning,” Senator Ryan said

The Australian Government is supporting all Australian schools through the Students First approach, which focusses on four key areas: teacher quality, school autonomy, engaging parents and strengthening the curriculum.

“The Australian Government is building a world-class education system to equip all students with the skills they need to succeed in an increasingly competitive world,” Senator Ryan said.
