Important works to strengthen the High Street Bridge over Toolern Creek in Melbourne’s west have been completed.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester said the Australian Government provided $1.116 million to the project under Round Two of the Bridges Renewal Programme, with funding matched by the Victorian Government.
“The Australian Government is investing $300 million over four years through the Bridges Renewal Programme to support the repair and replacement of bridges nationwide,” Mr Chester said.
“By strengthening the High Street Bridge, local residents and truckers will enjoy more reliable road access.”
Senator the Hon Scott Ryan, Minister for Vocational Education and Skills and Senator for Victoria, who was on hand today to inspect the completed works, said the $2.23 million High Street Bridge project had strengthened the bridge’s carrying capacity with the removal of its 30-tonne vehicle load limit.
“The Bridges Renewal Programme extends the lifespan of vital pieces of infrastructure, such as this bridge and will minimise the amount of maintenance work required in the years ahead,” Senator Ryan said.
“Works involved building a new bridge deck, installing steel safety barriers, guardrails and extending the existing footpath to the Melton Valley Drive intersection.”
Liberal candidate for Gorton Daryl Lang said the bridge was a vital community asset.
“During the works, the bridge was closed for three weeks. I thank the community in Melton for their patience,” Mr Lang said.
“The High Street Bridge is an important piece of infrastructure and this project ensures it will continue to serve the Gorton electorate for many years to come.”
