Senator the Hon Scott Ryan, Liberal Senator for Victoria, today visited the future site of the Wandong-Heathcote Junction War Memorial to congratulate organisers on receiving a $20,000 Australian Government grant.

The funding was allocated as part of the Government’s Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program.

Senator Ryan met with organisers, including War Memorial Committee members Allen Hall and Karen Christensen, as well as representatives of Mitchell Shire Council, to learn details of the community’s plans for the war memorial.

“I know constructing this memorial has been a long-held ambition for the Wandong and Heathcote Junction communities,” Senator Ryan said.

“I am pleased it was the Coalition Government that has provided an extra boost of funding to turn this project into a reality.

“I look forward to returning to see the finished memorial next year, as we continue to commemorate the Anzac centenary.”

The Department of Veterans Affairs received applications from all over Australia for the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program, which makes $125,000 available to each federal electorate for community and ex-service groups to create or host commemorations.

The Centenary of Anzac (2014-2018) marks a century of service and sacrifice, encompassing all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations in which Australians have been involved. It will be the most significant period of commemoration in our nation’s history and the Australian Government is committed to providing opportunities for all Australians to participate.
