2019-2020 Federal Budget information:
A record $100 billion is being invested in Australia’s highways, roads, rail and airports over the coming decade.
The Government’s transport infrastructure investment is delivering better roads and rail to help Australians commute, move freight and get home sooner and safer.
Since 2013 the Government has invested over $42 billion in over 600 major projects, of which 279 are now complete.
The Government’s infrastructure investments have driven the creation of more than 50,000 jobs since 2013-14.
The 2019-20 Budget increases the Government’s previous $75 billion infrastructure investment commitment, taking the total to a record $100 billion.
The Government is tackling congestion, with a fourfold increase in urban congestion funding from $1 billion to $4 billion.
The Government is investing $2 billion in fast rail between Melbourne and Geelong.
A new $500 million Commuter Car Park Fund will allow more commuters to park and ride, taking tens of thousands of cars off our roads.
The Government is improving freight routes by committing a further $1 billion to improve Australia’s network of Roads of Strategic Importance on top of the Government’s existing $3.5 billion investment. This will better connect communities and make it easier for regional businesses to access markets.
The Government is also providing an extra $2.2 billion for local road safety upgrades. As part of this, local councils will receive an additional $1.1 billion for vital road maintenance.
An additional $550 million will be targeted at accident black spots, and an additional $571 million will be provided for bridge renewals and heavy vehicle safety including the establishment of an Office of Road Safety with $15.2 million for innovative safety research.
Fast rail linking Geelong and Melbourne
The Government will deliver $2 billion to bring fast rail to life between Geelong and Melbourne, cutting the journey in half to 32 minutes.
The congestion-busting rail will be the first of its kind in Australia – travelling at the fastest speeds of any train line in the nation at an average of 160 km/h.
The fast rail connection will provide the commuters on this key transport corridor with faster and more reliable journey times, unlocking new economic and social opportunities for the region.
