A $1.7 million investment in new classrooms and other facilities for Year 5 and 6 students at Gilson College in Taylors Hill was today officially opened by Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education, Senator Scott Ryan.
The project was funded through a $600,000 Australian Government grant and by a $1.1 million contribution from Gilson College.
The new facilities include six classrooms, wet areas for arts and crafts, group learning areas for collaborative work, quiet areas for independent study, and outdoor learning areas to promote learning outside the classroom and learning about the environment.
Senator Ryan said the Australia Government is pleased to be able to help students of Gilson College learn the skills they need for success in the high-skill and high wage careers driving the Australian economy.
“I’m sure these new facilities will have a positive impact on the education and lives of students at Gilson College for many years to come, helping them to reach their potential as skilled workers and contributors to this community,” Senator Ryan said.
“The new facilities are an important part of ensuring that students get a great education.
“Through our Students First approach, and with investments such as this one at Gilson College, we are building a world-class education system to equip all students to succeed in an increasingly competitive world.”
Under Students First, the Government is working with the states and territories in 2014 on four key areas that will make a difference to student results:
- teacher quality
- school autonomy
- engaging parents in education
- strengthening the curriculum.
